PTC acquires Frustum and partners with Rockwell Automation to boost IoT and AI offerings

Massachusetts-based enterprise software firm PTC has announced that it has bought Colorado-based advanced generative design software company Frustum for about $70 million. Frustum’s generative design technology, which leverages AI to develop options for design, will prove to be a meaningful addition to the PTC Creo portfolio, the company added.

Jim Heppelmann, president and CEO, PTC, said: “PTC is pushing the boundaries of innovation with this acquisition. Creo is core to PTC’s overall strategy, and the embedded capabilities from ANSYS and, later, Frustum will elevate Creo to a leading position in the world of design and simulation. With breakthrough new technologies such as AR/VR, high-performance computing, IoT, AI, and additive manufacturing entering the picture, the CAD industry is going through a renaissance period, and PTC is committed to leading the way.”

Frustum will bring analysis upstream to the very beginning of the design process, as it complements PTC’s strategic relationship with ANSYS – a Pennsylvania-based engineering simulation software developer, The PTC Creo software will be able to suggest design approaches using generative design with the help of embedded ANSYS and Frustum capabilities. It will also guide users through the iterative design process using ANSYS Discovery Live, and eventually validate the full product design at scale using the broader ANSYS Discovery suite.

FactoryTalk InnovationSuite, which is introduced by PTC and Rockwell Automation, enhances connectivity to operational technology (OT) devices on the plant floor and natively supports the scalable and secure connection of the most commonly used industrial equipment. FactoryTalk Analytics and MOM platforms are included in this collaborative offering, along with PTC’s ThingWorx Industrial IoT Platform that comprises of industrial connectivity from Kepware, and the Vuforia augmented reality solution.
