Eight countries rank ahead of the US in automation readiness

According to the latest Automation Readiness Index, the US is behind eight other countries when it comes to being prepared for advancements such as AI and the IoT.

The study, published last week, ranked 25 of the world’s advanced economies in how well they’re preparing their workforce for automation.

Here are the top 10 rankings:

  • South Korea

  • Germany

  • Singapore

  • Japan

  • Canada

  • Estonia

  • France

  • UK

  • US

  • Australia

The US is often seen as a leader in areas such as AI, so it may be a surprise to see it ranked below many other countries. While it may be ahead in terms of innovation, the study highlights more needs to be done to prepare the workforce.

The researchers broke the study down into three main categories to assess the countries’ overall ranks. They were: Innovation Environment, Labour Market Policies, and Education Policies.

As reported by our sister publication AI News, the UK and France have invested heavily into ensuring they are ready to grasp the opportunities presented by automation. The Mayor of London recently launched a study designed to ensure policies help AI thrive.

Figures provided by Goldman Sachs claim that, between 2012 and 2016, the UK invested around $850 million in AI — the third largest investor of any country. France, which ranks just ahead of the UK, recently announced plans to invest around $1.8 billion in AI by 2022.

President Vladimir Putin of Russia, which ranked 16th in the report, now infamously said: “Artificial intelligence is the future, not only for Russia but for all humankind. It comes with colossal opportunities, but also threats that are difficult to predict. Whoever becomes the leader in this sphere will become the ruler of the world.”

Those are some high stakes.
