Qualcomm’s new wearable chip improves Wear OS battery life

It feels like it’s been an age, but Qualcomm’s first wearable chip in two years has launched promising much-improved battery life.

The main beneficiary of Qualcomm’s chip will be Wear OS devices. Apple and Samsung’s devices have benefited from in-house developed chips that Wear OS’ various manufacturers have not had access to.

Apple retains its lead at the top of the wearables tree, says IDC

Apple remains the strongest vendor in the wearables space with market-beating results – but the overall market is seeing an uptick thanks to strong figures in emerging markets.

The Cupertino giant holds 17% of the overall market share, up from 13% this time last year, with 4.7 million shipments this quarter and year over year growth of 38.4%, according to the latest figures from IDC.

HoloLens will provide 3D visualisations to surgeons in UK hospital

Surgeons working in a UK hospital want to use HoloLens to provide important 3D visualisations during critical operations.

Alder Hey Children’s Hospital cares for more than 270,000 kids per year. By partnering with Microsoft, the hospital is looking to use the company’s AR headset and Surface Hubs for its daily tasks.

During a surgery today, a surgeon is required to create a 3D visualisation in their mind of a person’s organ being worked on. This increases the risk of error.

Apple launches Heart Study to detect problems earlier

Apple and Stanford have teamed up to launch a dedicated app called Heart Study which aims to research and detect potential issues.

Apple reclaims top spot in wearable band market after strong Q3

Apple has retaken the lead in the wearable band market thanks to the release of the Apple Watch Series 3, according to the latest industry figures from Canalys.
