Volvo's trucks and cars will communicate to improve safety

Trucks and cars by automotive giant Volvo will soon communicate with each other to improve road safety.

Operating as two separate entities with the same owner, Volvo Cars and Volvo Trucks will collaborate on the ‘Connected Safety’ solution. By implementing V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle) technology, the companies hope sharing real-time data about road hazards may help to prevent accidents.

Eight countries rank ahead of the US in automation readiness

According to the latest Automation Readiness Index, the US is behind eight other countries when it comes to being prepared for advancements such as AI and the IoT.

The study, published last week, ranked 25 of the world’s advanced economies in how well they’re preparing their workforce for automation.

Here are the top 10 rankings:

  • South Korea

  • Germany

  • Singapore

  • Japan

  • Canada

  • Estonia

  • France

  • UK

  • US

  • Australia

The US is often seen as a leader in areas such as AI, so it may be a surprise to see it ranked below many other countries. While it may be ahead in terms of innovation, the study highlights more needs to be done to prepare the workforce.

Michigan and the UK will collaborate on self-driving cars

Representatives from the state of Michigan and the UK have signed a collaboration agreement to share each other’s expertise in automobiles to advance self-driving cars and their infrastructure.

China sets out guidelines for testing self-driving cars

China has set out its national guidelines for testing self-driving cars on its roads to ensure developments are safe but unhindered in a bid to ensure the country is a leader in the commercialisation of such vehicles.

Self-driving Uber car strikes and kills Arizona woman, Uber halts tests

A self-driving Uber car has struck and killed a woman in Tempe, Arizona, in what is believed to be the first known death of a pedestrian from an autonomous vehicle.

As reported by the New York Times, the Uber vehicle did have a human safety driver on board but was in autonomous mode when the collision occurred, according to a statement from Tempe police. The woman was taken to hospital but later died of her injuries.
