Gartner: Global expenditure on IoT security to hit $1.5 billion in 2018

A new report from Gartner has projected that expenditure on IoT security across the globe will hit $1.5 billion in 2018 from $1.2 billion in 2017 due to the growing efforts from enterprises to shield themselves from IoT-based threats.

The analyst firm found that over the last three years, nearly 20% of enterprises were hit by at least one IoT-based attack.

Security risk against enterprises continues undimmed as IoT popularity grows

Only one in four organisations can protect themselves against IoT threats, says survey

A survey from UK-based firm Databarracks has found that only 27% of organisations polled feel able to protect themselves against IoT threats.

Based on the findings, its managing director Peter Groucutt has said that organisations must now factor IoT into their continuity planning.

US consumers concerned about lack of standardisation in driverless car legislation

Driverless cars are on their way, whatever speed they arrive, but according to a new study many US citizens are still concerned about various aspects of their safety.

The study from Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, which polled 1,005 adults living in the US, found more than three quarters opposed disconnection of vehicle controls such as steering wheels and brake pedals, while the vast majority saw concern with more general cybersecurity and safety legislation.

Consumers willing to accept the value of IoT despite wafer-thin trust in companies’ data policies

New research from Cisco has explored the pay-off required between value and trust for the Internet of Things (IoT); consumers recognise the value they provide, but are less sure about how their data is being managed and used.

Botnet Wars: Return of the Mirai

Chinese security firm Qihoo 360 Netlab have discovered a new variant of the Mirai botnet which caused havoc last year.

The original Mirai botnet was so destructive that it made national headlines last year in many countries around the world. Internet users found many of their favourite services were inaccessible after hackers used the botnet to DDoS companies such as Dyn, a company that controls much of the internet’s DNS infrastructure.
