Hardware meets software: Seven steps to creating new revenue with IoT

Manufacturers used to determine pricing based on a physical item.  Today, Industry 4.0 and the integration of software into products have brought new pricing approaches into the picture.  But it’s not as simple as adding a fee for the software into the price.  Software pricing and licensing is a whole new ballgame, involving licenses, users, renewals and support.  Manufacturers may also have multiple versions of software that need to be tracked and updated.

In addition to new needs,...

Nvidia’s AI robot learns from observing humans

Nvidia has demonstrated a robot with a groundbreaking AI which learns to complete tasks by observing the actions of a human.

The researchers, led by Stan Birchfield and Jonathan Tremblay, claim their development is a ‘first of its kind’ deep learning-based system.

In their research paper, they state:

“For robots to perform useful tasks in real-world settings, it must be easy to communicate the task to the robot; this includes both the desired result and any hints as to...

Eight countries rank ahead of the US in automation readiness

According to the latest Automation Readiness Index, the US is behind eight other countries when it comes to being prepared for advancements such as AI and the IoT.

The study, published last week, ranked 25 of the world’s advanced economies in how well they’re preparing their workforce for automation.

Here are the top 10 rankings:

  • South Korea

  • Germany

  • Singapore

  • Japan

  • Canada

  • Estonia

  • France

  • UK

  • US

  • Australia

The US is often seen as a leader in areas such as AI, so it may be a surprise to see it ranked below many other countries. While it may be ahead in terms of innovation, the study highlights more needs to be done to prepare the workforce.

The researchers broke the study down into three main categories to assess the countries’ overall ranks. They were: Innovation Environment,...

Seven lessons for Industrial IoT and data teams: How to forge a path to success

In the Industrial IoT world, we often hear comments like “Let’s make our existing machine or tool connected, and later we will find the way to create value or monetise it”, or “we need more and more data so we can solve business problems”. Is this approach enough? Is it a good idea to start the thinking process from connecting the products and collecting huge amounts of data?

In the Industrial IoT space, data and IoT teams face challenges which have many similarities. This...

Why for manufacturers the customer must be at the centre of the digital strategy

It’s easy to get obsessed with technology – it is the key enabler of today’s revolution – but the harder part of the transformation is cultural.

It’s about putting the customer experience and their business outcomes at the centre of everything. That means realigning engineering, manufacturing and the supply chain around delivering a world-class sales and service experience. It means new thinking about optimising customer satisfaction and loyalty metrics such as Customer...
