In less than five years, Gartner tells us that there will be more than 26 billion different connected devices in our homes, cars and businesses. All designed to make our lives easier and facilitate tasks for us – and that figure doesn’t even include personal computers, tablets and smartphones.

As the Internet of Things (IoT) converges with servitization, machine to machine learning, 3D printing and cloud adoption, one of the biggest considerations is going...

IoT is emerging from the hype – but still a long way to go

(c)iStock.com/Alex Belomlinsky

While it may be a good headline that Gartner condemned the Internet of Things (IoT) as one of the most overhyped technology trends of 2015, it is somewhat misleading by failing to acknowledge the rapid progress being made – even if these are still early days. However, Gartner was correct that the full promise of IoT as a joined up ecosystem of interoperable components is indeed five to 10 years away.

There are already demonstrable...

Why smart device growth is expected to mimic the smartphone craze

(c)iStock.com/maxsattana

To say that there is an overabundance of technology in our world would be an understatement. After all, there’s even a smart crockpot by Belkin that can be controlled from out of the home.

However, while it certainly seems that there’s a market for every novel idea out there, it’s not so simple to foretell which will hit and which will miss. After all, even smartphones weren’t a hit out of the gate. Infact, by the end of 2009, only
