An NB-IoT first for North America – but what will it change?

Last week, and with considerable fanfare, T-Mobile announced completing the trial of North America’s first NB-IoT network. This in contrast to AT&T and Verizon’s strategy for an initial CAT-M1 rollout, to be followed by NB1 at a later date.

While this has justifiably caused initial excitement, to what extent will it truly affect the IoT market, both domestically or abroad?

  • This trial is an exciting NB-IoT first for the United...

Understanding the critical role of 'first receiver' in IoT data

In The Future of IoT: Leveraging the Shift to a Data Centric World, the concept which underpins the book is the idea that the enterprise will increasingly demand control of IoT data, but to do so in a way that benefits all constituents. This extract focuses on and introduces the important concept of the ‘first receiver’ and how it allows enterprises using various IoT subsystems to effectively leverage data while providing it to external constituents.

Why IoT as a service will provide businesses with the tools necessary for implementation

While the concept of IoT offers appeal to businesses of every size, there are several issues that have deterred many organisations, especially SMEs, from entering the market. The escalating costs of mobile networks, both 3G and 4G, have made IoT projects at scale unaffordable and while the market has responded with the introduction of low cost, low power wide area networking (LPWANs), as yet there is no one solution standard. Indeed, in the UK, there is no single network that provides nationwide...

Setting the stage for the future of farming: Drones, autonomous vehicles, and more

Agricultural practices will need to continue to develop and become more efficient, if the findings of recent research pieces are anything to go by. For instance, PwC has reported on expert views that agricultural consumption will need to increase by close to 70 per cent by 2050 to account for the world’s growing population — projected to hit 9 billion people in the same year. While not as high, the World Bank has predicted that those across the globe will need to produce 50 per cent more food by...
